LITHUANIAN SCHOOL
Vilnius Grigiskes “Sviesos” gymnasium is a public school that provides secondary education for the students from 5th to 12th grades. There are almost 600 students and over 60 teachers. The history of our school dates back only 25 years and it is because of the area. Grigiskes is the suburb of the capital city of Lithuania. The biggest number of people living here are not the Lithuanian. They are the Russian, the Polish and the Byelorussian. They face the risk of social exclusion, as well as their children. Parents want their children to study in a Lithuanian school, the only in this area, so our school is multicultural. There are students from economically disadvantaged families and SEN. The students need motivation and support, European understanding of cooperation and communication, that can be given to our students by the common activities and collaboration in projects. At our gymnasium English is taught as the main foreign language and our students learn German, French, Russian as the second foreign language. We also make use of new technologies in our school to support students with learning difficulties. The staff of our gymnasium have enough experience to work with the colleagues from foreign countries, to colaborate and implement common activities. Most of them are highly qualified and experienced. They are strongly motivated to work in this project. Participating in EU projects has a lot of advantages both for the teachers and the students, community. Involving more students and teachers in the project means that they will be able to see good opportunities, to learn about the problems of each country. The other important thing is to have a common goal and try to find a solution to the problem. Our school wants to take part in European
cooperation activities because we want to teach our students responsibility, individual initiative and freedom, balanced with social responsibility and team spirit. Also, to motivate our students to develop their linguistic skills and to raise their expectations and motivation more generally. We want to show our students that everybody has the same rights to live and to promote values such as respect towards themselves and others, towards the cultural differences.
